Sleepy Hollow
Paramount
Cast: Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson, Michael Gambon, Casper Van Dien
Director: Tim Burton
MPAA Rating: R (for graphic horror violence and gore, and for a scene of sexuality)
If your expecting a live action version of the quirky Disney cartoon, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, you're dead wrong. This version, directed Tim Burton who has brought us such oddball films as Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, and Mars Attacks, is a dark, creepy Sleepy Hollow where a headless horseman is riding around decapitating victims left and right.
The film stars Johnny Depp as New York constable Icabod Crane who is sent to investigate the murders in Sleepy Hollow. He soon finds that his modern day instruments of science can not help him in unfolding the mystery at hand. As the film progresses we see a wide range of beautiful scenery and sets including the town and the incredibly wicked Tree of the Dead.
Although the film may not be as terrifying as the trailer leads us to believe, Sleepy Hollow is a very entertaining flick chock full of bloody, severed heads and incredible action sequences between the horseman and other characters. The film leads us to a very well-done ending where all the questions are answered and even more are raised (because of having to wait until the last half hour to figure everything out, you're probably going to want to go see it more than once). Sleepy Hollow is a visual treat and will probably become a new Halloween tradition for many. It's hard to be disappointed with a film as creative and original as this.
