Supernova
Metro-goldwyn-mayer Distribution Co.
Starring: James Spader, Angela Bassett, Lou Diamond Phillips, Robin Tunney, Wilson Cruz
Director: Thomas Lee (Walter Hill)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for sci-fi action violence and sensuality/nudity)

Thomas Lee, the credited director of Supernova doesn't really exist. Infact, during the end of production the original director, Walter Hill ("Hard Times" and "48 Hours"), walked out on the project and so the fake identity "Thomas Lee" was assigned as director. After hearing this, you have to wonder just how bad the movie's going to be -- I know I did.

In the movie, a crew of medical technicians aboard rescue vessel Nightingale 229, recieve a distress call from an abandoned moon. When they answer the call all hell breaks loose as their new passenger with his explosive purple-glowing object takes over the ship, killing off the passengers one by one until the final conflict.

This movie comes across as another bad Alien ripoff, but I kind of enjoyed the movie. The special effects were creative and the suspense was well executed. If Walter Hill had stuck with the project it probably would have been an excellent movie.

Rating: B
